Inhabitants of our reefs. This month: the tarpon

Tarpon

The tarpon is a fish that is member of the family of the Megalopidae in which there are two species : the Atlantic tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) and the Indo-Pacific tarpon, smaller than its cousin (Megalops cyprinoides). The tarpon is the biggest fish with scales in the world. This is a fish that can live both in fresh and salt water, we can meet it on the reefs where it is hunting, but also in the mangroves, where it is born, and estuaries. While diving, it is not so uncommon to meet up a few of them as it comes to feed close to the coast.

The tarpon is a warm seas fish that lives especially on Western Africa coasts and in the Caribbean. Also known as « palika » in French Guyana and « grand écaille » or « gran tekai » (« big scale ») in Martinique and Guadeloupe (French islands), this is a massive fish that can weigh up to 150 kg (roughly 300 lbs) for a size of barely 2,5m.

Its body is covered with large silvery scales ( their size on an adult fish can be up to 5cm of diameter) and its back can be darker. It is easy to recognize the tarpon thanks to its broad mouth with a prominent lower jaw, furnished with many small sharp teeth. The back fin is high and narrow, the caudal fin, like a snake’s tongue, is symmetrical.
The pectoral fins are located quite low on the body, and the pelvic ones quite on its back. All its fins are spineless as the rays that bear them are soft and articulated.
Moreover, this is one of the only fishes that can breath at the surface thanks to its swim bladder, connected to the oesophagus.
The adult tarpon is a feared predator that feeds on fishes and shellfishes, while the juvenile ones feed on plankton. The larvae grow up in the coastal marshes or estuaries.

Fishermen do like this fish as with the tarpon, fishing turns into a real sport. It is not looked for its flesh as it is quite a poor quality flesh but more for its violent reactions and combattivity when hooked.

You can meet the tarpons at the end of Tortugas (Turtle Reef).

Merida, the white city

The « conquistador » Francisco de Montejo built the city of Mérida on january the 6th of 1542. This town has been built on the ancient site of the Mayan city T’ho (also known as Ichcaanziho, « the 5 hills town », related to five pyramids), that had been an important cultural Mayan centre for centuries. Because of this, many historians consider Mérida the oldest continually occupied city in the Americas. The end of the building of Mérida marked the definitive occupation of the region by the Spanish kind.

Merida

Spanish is spoken there with a deep accent influenced by the Mayan language.

Carved Maya stones from ancient T'ho were widely used to build the Spanish colonial buildings that are plentiful in downtown Mérida, and are visible, for instance, in the walls of the main cathedral. Much of Mérida's architecture from the colonial period through the 18th century and 19th century is still standing in the centro historico of the city. From colonial times through the mid 19th century, Mérida was a walled city intended to protect the Peninsular and Criollo residents from periodic revolts by the indigenous Maya. Several of the old Spanish city gates survive, but modern Mérida has expanded well beyond the old city walls.

Late in the 19th century and the early 20th Century, the area surrounding Mérida prospered from the production of henequén. For a brief period, around the turn of the 20th century, Mérida was said to house more millionaires than any other city in the world. The result of this concentration of wealth can still be seen today. Many large and elaborate homes still line the main avenue of Paseo de Montejo, though few are occupied today by individual families. Many of these homes have been restored and now serve as office buildings for banks and insurance companies.

Mérida has one of the largest centro historico districts in the Americas (surpassed only by Mexico City and Havana, Cuba). Large and small colonial homes line the city streets to this day, in various states of disrepair and renovation; the historical center of Mérida is currently undergoing a minor renaissance as more and more people are moving into the old buildings and reviving their former glory.

Mérida is the cultural and financial capital of the Yucatán Peninsula, as well as the capital city of the state of Yucatán.

Nowadays, Mérida is quite well known for its handcrafts market : you will find there panamas (hats), huipiles (traditional dresses), guayaberas (Mayan shirts), and also hammocks… It could not be more picturesque, this market, full of colors will not let you indifferent and will let you imperishable memories.

Culturally speaking, you will find many museums, you can be sure to find one that you will like :

  • the anthropological museum, located on the Paseo de Montejo
  • the Yucatecan songs museum for the ones in love with music ( the « trova » is the traditional music of the town)
  • the Macay museum, dedicated to modern art

For the ones that are not so fond of museums, the cathedral, as well as magnificent churches, or even the university and the theaters of the town will open their doors just to offer you an architectural and nice outline of the city.

In one word, you will automatically find something you like in this place. Do not forget the restaurants of the town, that I can promise, are worth trying !!

Charlotte’s professional life, an impassioned diver

Plongeuse

When you read this newsletter, you will probably be back home from your vacation or up to get back home. With the eyes still in the deep blue of the ocean, your mind remains with the multicoloured inhabitants of coral reefs, and your return to your work and the underground does not seem so charming to you.

This month, the whole Phocea team wishes to extend a little your vacation and invite you to a virtual trip that any of you can undertake.

Here is a sum up of the two last years of Charlotte’s professional life, an impassioned diver who has decided to change her life becoming a scuba instructor.

Charlotte is dutch, and used to work as a manager for several years in the logistic department of the Dutch Railway Company.

In 2008, she got in touch with us to participate to one of our IDC sessions. In October 2008, she just made it. After 11 days of training course and 2 examination days, Charlotte actually began the life she was dreaming about.

After Mexico, she returned to Netherlands to set her new life and a few months later, her first destination has been Fidji Islands !

No more than these islands.. !! During several months, Charlotte participated to a reef census and conservation project around the atolls of these dreamful islands. This first experience, for several months has been for her the confirmation of this big turning in her life.

After Fidji Islands, it has been Thailand where Charlotte found without any problem a job as a dive instructor and moved to Ko Phi Phi. She took advantage of a little time she had to go on her training, turning into a MSDT and began to teach diving. Once again, the scenery changed, she met up new people and discovered a new culture. After a few months enjoying the Siam wonders, she moved again, that time, to Netherlands Antilles and once again new underwater meets.

From the last news I had, Charlotte is now on Saba Island, probably with many projects in mind and I am pretty sure with an idea of a new destination… This also makes part of the scuba diving world. A unique opportunity to go discovering the world and the most beautiful dive spots on Earth.

So, whatever may be your projects, to extend your vacation, to finance your trips and to go discovering the most beautiful sea bottoms, to become a scuba diving professional will open you a full bunch of doors.

We remind you that Phocea proposes professional training courses all year long from the Divemaster course to the IDC Staff Instructor course.

Get in touch with us to know what we can offer you and so, to be able to live your dream. !!

Next EFRI / IDC / MSDT sessions :

  • From September the 11th to the 23rd
  • From November the 20th to December the 2nd
Tec - la plongée au Trimix

Each diver, along his diving life, will dream about depth and will think about the fascination, the attraction and the mysteries it represents. Who has never dreamt to be the first man to saunter on the gangways of a destroyer sunk during the war ? Which diver has never closed the eyes, dreaming about being Indiana Jones looking for a treasure ? Who never felt up to go on descending while it is time to decelerate ?

Trimix

And, would not it be the dive of your life if you were able to taste the joy of freefall for several minutes, to softly land on a wreck sunk for many decades and still virgin of any penetration thanks to its depth ? Once inside, you would even have time to excavate and inspect pieces of crockery, vestige of the crew daily life, to stop in front of the stem, while imagining the majesty of this ship when she was floating. And after your return, would you remember everything ?

It sounds so beautiful that it mustn’t be possible !!

Certainly not with the air we usually breath while diving. Such a dive would be a source of problems, the nitrogen narcosis would be the main one. It would prevent us from having a stroll with a clear mind at such a depth. It would be quite impossible to remember anything from such a dive, or just to react correctly in case any issue would come out, without talking about the serious consequences that can generate an overexertion at this depth.

If we cannot breath air, so, what are we breathing ?

Obviously... Trimix ! This word is a contraction of two words : "tri" for three and "mix" for mix.

This is indeed any mix of three gases, even if while diving, this word is more commonly related to a mix of helium, oxygen and nitrogen.

The helium to talk like Daffy Duck is quite funny. But what is the purpose ?

The main interest of helium is to allow us to manage our narcosis, indeed, it is an effect of the nitrogen. We gain three advantages with the trimix :

  • We can dive at a depth we are already used to go, but with a quite lower narcosis, what will allow us to get back to the surface with many more memories than if we had dove with air, and to have a better control of delicate situations at depth.
  • It also allows us to go deeper as, beyond a specific depth, the oxygen in the air can also be the origin of another kind of problems : the hyperoxia. So, the quantity of oxygen will also be reduced and replaced by helium to go to such a depth minimizing this risk.
  • Another advantage of helium, as it is a gas that is less dense than air, the breathing effort for a specific depth will be lower than with air, pulling away the spectrum of overexertion and overconsumption. A very important point of safety. And this way, the breathing comfort is increased.

How can you have the proper training ?

Although it is still marginal, the trimix dive has been democratized for the last years, and as it is not a secret beloved and kept by just a few people, the information and the training are henceforth opened to many experienced divers. These trainings are from now on proposed by several diving organizations such as DSAT, TDI, IANTD and many more...

Then, you will be able to go up to 100m (333ft), with an increased safety, to go and visit wrecks that will remain phantasms for most of your buddies, to meet up species that live at such depths ; in short, you will have just opened the doors of a brand new world, extended your limits beyond what can be conceived. So, if you are interested in that, to get your training in warm water allows you to forget thermal problems related to helium, the excellent visibility we enjoy here will allow you to meet, see and know the local fauna during your decompression stops. Furthermore the deep areas we finish the course are just two minutes away from the dive centre by boat.

As you already know, at Phocea, we want to be cutting edge regarding the courses and our next session is for November. So, just get in touch with us for any further information and what about booking your course in advance.
