Rinsing your equipment could be nothing less exciting than enjoying a day of cavern dives in the famous Mexican cenotes, before finally releasing nitrogen visiting one of the most amaising mayan ruins around the area.

The Garden of Eden

Garden of eden

And yes, you are not dreaming, if you do your IDC with us, you will know the more than famous Garden of Eden…. !!

The Garden of Eden, alias Ponderosa, is in fact a cenote that presents the characteristics of an open water spot and in which take place the open water presentations of the candidates instructors during the IE (Instructor Examination).

We must admit that this cenote is wonderfully named as, once arrived, the spot offers a breathtaking view onto its cristal clear water. Obviously, cristal clear waters in the surroundings are not really what we miss the most and it is not really enough to turn it into an « Heaven’s garden ». But, the luxurious vegetation and the magic of the singing birds contribute generously in making it a paradise.

Nonetheless, do not misunderstand our point, we are there to work. Yes, we can promise that during your IDC, you will have the opportunity to dive twice in this magnificent environment. After these two dives, it will be much easier for you to be ready and serene on the D day : you cannot be more prepared to get into the professional diving world.

So, if you wish to discover our Mexican Garden of Eden and if you are thinking about participating to the IDC, do not hesitate anymore, just get in touch with us.

June: 2 IDC for just one month

Camille Laquerriere Course Director

While I am writing these few lines, this is the very beginning of our second IDC of the month.

From June the 1st, we had begun a session in Spanish with a quite cosmopolitan class as our candidates came from different parts of the world to participate to our IDC : Chile, Argentina, Spain, Mexico and Texas.
On June the 14th, the Frenchies began their scuba diving teaching training.

The goal : turn themselves into PADI Scuba Diving Instructors on June the 29th, and so, be able to live from and for their passion.

To all of them : be courageous and keep working on your training and examination till the more than waited D day.

Tec & Full cave

It seems that more and more people are interested in underground diving and especially diving in Yucatan caves that are, for the ones who know them, the Promised Land of cave diving, a little bit like Hawaii for surfing, or the Himalaya for alpinism : the Holy Grail, a goal in itself, in short.

Diving in the Yucatan peninsula is without any doubt THE best thing to do for a great bunch of reasons. Here follow a few of them :

Diving in Yucatan cenote

The availability :

The Yucatan peninsula is really like a geological piece of Gruyere, where the entire flow of fresh water is underground. From time to time, a collapse due to natural erosion creates an opening onto this « underworld » as Mayan people call it, offering this way access to the vastness and diversity of these underground rivers (through the so well known « cenotes »). According to the N.A.S.A., there would be more than 5000 cenotes in the peninsula. It allows us to have access to many spots, quite diversified, in a very little time, a few of them are even located in Playa del Carmen downtown. Yes, I know it sounds incredible. so this is the end of the long and exhausting ways for hours to get to an insulated cavity.

The accessibility :

Specific accesses have been arranged in the majority of the most famous spots, the owners are engaged in the conservation of « their » cenotes, a constant temperature all year long, 77°F, and mostly shallow dives. So many conditions put together so that your training is focused on spending as much as time as possible underwater, inside the matter itself, ensuring so an optimization of the specific technics of underground diving. This is the end of the training dives that last 3 hours, including two and a half during the decompression stop !!! Here, with us, you will spend this additional time working on and improving your buoyancy, the pre-dive processes and you will make during this course penetrations whose distance would give so many dreams of cave diving to more than one speleological diver in Europe.

The diversity :

A good diver is first an experimented diver and what could be better than diversifying the situations to get experimented ?
As each underground network has its own « personality, you will usually begin your training in an environment which is not really fragile and relatively easy : very wide passages, cristal clear visibility, what will allow you to apply the specific processes and equipment to this activity in a controlled ambient, to go then towards longer and longer penetrations, in narrower and more technical passages. But with more and more fascinating landscapes. No other place in the world can offer you as much as contrast in such a concentrated area.

The technics :

Whatever beforehand may think many underground divers, the Mexican underground dives are not easier than in the rest of the world, they admittedly present many advantages, but also many specific dangers : the traversed distance during these dives requires a quite precise plan, it is indeed quite easy to traverse tens of hundreds feet with relatively little gas. but in case of emergency, the way back becomes quite more complicated.
The great number of interconnected galleries and their, at least labyrinthian ramifications require cutting edge navigation technics, that will make you then see many of the Old World spots as bare corridors.
The fragility of the speleothems (stalagtites, helictites, stalagmites, columns, basins) and of the sediment imposes here pure and almost perfect buoyancy, propulsion technics and configurations in order not to damage them, but also to keep correct visibility on the way back, guarantee of your safety. Here more than elsewhere, rigour and precision are required. And, these technics will make you become a quite better diver in open water (this is the end of the flippers onto the coral reef or even the need of your hands to go backward. Yes this specific technic makes part of the course !….).

And actually Wonderland :

Once your couse over, it is not really useful to come and come back 30 times in the galleries where you have followed your course, the beauty and the secrets of the Yucatan peninsula immersed networks, their historical and geological herancy will allow any of you to find in their deepness your happiness : a large and technical dive in Chan Hol, the mysticism of sunrays in the cenote Heaven’s Gates, restrictions with black stalagtites in Minotauro, billions year old fossils in Cenote Cristalino. Or a sample of everything in Cenote Ponderosa. So, the limits are just the ones of your own dreams. And I am pretty sure it will be hard for you to consider underground diving differently from its Mexican touch !!!

Come and discover these wonders and ask us the schedule of the next Full Cave session with Phocea Mexico.
